Music Characters That Look Similar
Choose an actual music character when writing notation, and use plain punctuation for tasks that require it.
| Character | Name | Difference to remember |
|---|---|---|
| ♯ | Music sharp sign | Different from the ASCII number sign # |
| ♭ | Music flat sign | Different from a lowercase Latin b |
| ♮ | Music natural sign | A separate accidental, not a letter |
| ♪ | Eighth note | A single note character |
| ♫ | Beamed eighth notes | One character depicting two beamed notes |
Using Musical Characters
Use text glyphs for short references and notation software when the score itself matters.
Check font coverage
Characters such as 𝄞 are outside the Basic Multilingual Plane. A box can mean that the current font has no suitable glyph; try a music font or another app.
A character is not a complete score
Clefs and notes copied as text do not automatically align to a staff or carry playback timing. Use a notation editor for readable, editable sheet music.
Keep decoration distinct
♪ and ♫ make simple text decorations. 🎵 and 🎶 are emoji, so their color and artwork can vary across platforms.
