Tick, Checkbox or Emoji?
Use shape and words together so a status does not depend on color alone.
| Character | Type | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| ✓ | Text check mark | A simple tick that usually follows text color |
| ✔ | Heavy check mark | A thicker tick, with font-dependent appearance |
| ☐ | Ballot box | An empty box character |
| ☑ | Ballot box with check | A checked box character |
| ✅ | Check mark button emoji | A colored status graphic in supporting apps |
Make a Clear Checklist
Text marks are useful in notes and documents, but they do not store a checked state.
Use real form controls on websites
☐ and ☑ are characters. For an interactive web form, use a labelled checkbox input so people can toggle it with a keyboard or assistive technology.
Keep status readable
Write ✓ Done or ✗ Failed rather than showing a colored mark alone. The words remain meaningful if the symbol looks different on another device.
Copy into Word
In Word for Windows, type 2713 then Alt + X for ✓, or 2611 then Alt + X for ☑. The Insert Symbol dialog is another option.

Check Mark Symbols FAQ
What is the difference between ✓ and ✔?
✓ is CHECK MARK, U+2713. ✔ is HEAVY CHECK MARK, U+2714. They are separate characters, and the exact stroke thickness depends on the font.
Can I click a pasted ☐ to check it?
Not by itself. It is text. Replace it with ☑ manually, or use the checkbox feature provided by your notes app, document editor or form.
Why is ✅ green while ✓ is plain?
✅ is commonly rendered as a colored emoji. ✓ is usually a text glyph that inherits the surrounding font color. Applications can vary in how they render both.
Can I make a printable checklist with these boxes?
Yes. Paste ☐ beside each task, or use ☑ for a completed task. These marks remain text in the document; use your editor’s checkbox feature if you need a control that can be toggled.
Which mark can I use for a failed or incomplete item?
✗ and ✘ are text X marks, while ❌ is usually an emoji. Add a word such as Failed or Incomplete so the status remains clear without relying on its color or shape.
